Neurotrophic Keratitis

Neurotrophic Keratitis (NK) is a neurodegenerative process that results in reduced or loss of sensation in the cornea. This means you might not know that you have it. Oftentimes, the only symptom is blurred vision. This disease process is often mistaken for Dry Eye Disease in its early stages. Risk factors for developing Neurotrophic Keratitis include h/o surgery in the eye, i.e. LASIK, PRK; use of glaucoma medications; chronic use of eye drops; long term contact lens wear; diabetes; multiple sclerosis and many more. NK can lead to vision loss if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. At Avant Eyes Optometry & Advanced Dry Eye Center, we specifically include NK testing as part of every dry eye consultation. We have many treatment options available to us such as autologous serum eye drops, amniotic membranes and the newly FDA-approved Cenegermin 0.002% ophthalmic solution (Oxervate, Dompe).
