You may often wonder which foods are beneficial to maintain good eye health and prevent future eye disease. Our favorite way to put this is: “Eat the rainbow.” Incorporating brightly colored fruits and vegetables in your diet ensures inclusion of important micronutrients such as Vitamin A and C. brightly colored vegetables are also high in lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidants that are helpful in supporting macular health, especially in patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
Marine based sources such as fish and algae (for vegans) are high in omega 3 fatty acids, and are beneficial for their anti-inflammatory properties. Fish such as salmon, sardines, tuna and mackerel are considered the best sources to support good eye health.
Patients with dry eye disease benefit greatly from a diet low in dairy and high in omega-3 fatty acids. Oftentimes, we cannot source enough quantity from the diet and must turn to supplements. EPA and DHA are the best recommended sources of omega 3 fatty acids specifically for dry eye disease and rosacea.
Always ask your eye doctor if taking supplements is right for you.
